Organise a docathon

As well as joining an existing Global Docathon, you can also organise your own event—aligning it with your school calendar and creating meaningful opportunities for student leadership.

Why organise a docathon at your school?

Celebrate student voices

Showcase meaningful stories created by your students and build a stronger, more connected school culture.

Multiply the Impact

Create authentic leadership opportunities through a student-led event—host it within your school or open it up to community partners, other schools, and parents.

Customize The Experience

Align your Docathon with existing events, or run it as a stand-alone experience — fully customisable to your time and resources.

How we support you

Any school can become a host - we'll guide you through the process!

Student Training

We equip student leaders to organize and host the event.

GLOBAL JUDGES

We bring in professional storytellers and expert judges—virtually or in person.

Regional Collaboration

Want to extend the reach of your event? We can help involve other schools, creating a regional hub

The docathon event

Whether you join a Global Docathon or organise your own, this is how the live event unfolds.

30–90 minutes

Events last 30–90 minutes, depending on the number of films

live stream

Students unable to attend in person can join via live stream

standalone screenings

Events may run as standalone screenings or as part of a wider conference or school event

Community partners and NGO's

Attendees may include: Community partners and NGOs, film professionals and a diverse array of students

how it works

Prior to the event, 3–5 student films are selected for screening

Students introduce their films (via video message if not attending in person)

Each film is discussed and reflected on by student and professional judges, as well as attendees

Every screening is an opportunity to reflect, celebrate, and consider action around real-world issues

student film exchange

Not every film can be screened at a live Docathon. However, every student who makes a film has the opportunity to share their work through a Student Film Exchange and earn the Global Perspectives Leader credential.

60-minute session

Global Docathon event

Normally organised by the Docathon team alongside an existing Global Docathon event

how it works

Students submit their films in advance, and they are grouped according to theme

Students introduce their films in breakout rooms and lead short discussions

Each breakout room shares key reflections back with the full group

Global Perspectives Leader credential

To earn the Global Perspectives Leader credential, students must join any live Student Film Exchange and then submit their film in advance to an online gallery, for it to be showcased during the RMIT Docathon (June 2026)

What is the global perspectives leader credential?

The Global Perspectives Leader credential recognises students who demonstrate global awareness and leadership by sharing their documentary, leading dialogue with peers from different countries, and reflecting on issues beyond their local context. It validates students’ ability to engage thoughtfully with diverse perspectives through storytelling.
